New NBA regulations are released! Is this necessary?

2:40pm, 15 September 2025Basketball

The NBA will implement new regulations in the 2025-26 season: If the ultra-long-distance buzzer-beating shot at the last moment of each quarter is missed, it will not be included in the player's personal shooting percentage, and it will only be recorded as a team's missed shot.

The rule was actually tried in the G League. The rules of the Development League are: shots launched from the backcourt, 36 feet away from the basket, completed within the last 3 seconds of the first three quarters, if the shot is lost, it will not be recorded as the player's personal shot, but will be similar to a "team mistake", and will be recorded as a "team shot"; if the shot is made, it will be recorded as a shot. If the shot meets the above conditions but is blocked by the defensive player, the shot will be counted as a team shooting attempt, and the defensive player will get the block statistics. Any statistics related to rebounds after blocking will continue to be credited to individual players as needed. The three conditions to note are: the last 3 seconds of each quarter in the first three quarters; the shot position is outside the extension line outside the middle circle (about 36 feet away from the basket); the round starts from the backcourt. The NBA also tested this change in the summer league in July this year and was in advance. At present, the League Competition Committee has been approved. What is the starting point of the alliance for the change of the statistics rule

? Encourage action. It aims to eliminate players' concerns about lowering their shooting percentages and motivate them to try ultra-long shots at the end of the quarter. Everyone can throw it away with confidence. In the end, you don’t need to hold the ball and spend time, and you don’t need to worry about hitting the ball or making mistakes and “blaming” your teammates. The price of the shot is counting personal data, but the price of the shot is not counting. There is such a benefit... The new regulations are likely to give birth to more famous "half-court fairy balls" scenes, providing more video materials for the top ten balls, and bringing fans a more exciting viewing experience. Therefore, as the most successful basketball business league, the NBA not only understands the psychology of players, but also definitely understands traffic. Regarding not taking action at the last moment, the scene that left a deep impression on me was the G4 of the Lakers in 2020 Heat Finals.

In the last attack in the first half, after Herro scored a buzzer-beating ball, the Lakers still had 3.1 seconds of offensive time, and Rondo immediately ran to the frontcourt, but James chose to give up the offense and passed the ball to Rondo in the frontcourt at the end of the last time.

The latter had already finished the first half after receiving the ball. He was a little angry and smashed the ball hard on the floor.

As a Lakers fan, one digit is the same as one. I was puzzled by James' failure to take action, especially in the finals, the score was so stalemate.

Guide Long: Your rule was introduced too late...

Then if you use this new rule to compare with the 24-25 season, who will be the biggest beneficiary? Nikola Jokic. Let’s have a chat with the teacher, a Buddhist big boy, he even stands by the side to win the championship. It’s even more impossible for him to care about the so-called data and hit rate in the NBA. Last season, he had 22 buzzer-beating three-pointers near the half and even further, ranking first. Mikal Bridges ranked second in 12 times, while Edwards, Halliburton and Porter Jr. also ranked more than 8 times. If these 22 buzzer-beating irons were erased with one click, Jokic's three-point shooting rate immediately soared by 2.3%. It will rise from 41.7% to 44.0%, and its overall shooting percentage will rise from 57.6% to 58.4%. Zhu Meng once said on the show: "If you hold this kind of ball and don't shoot it, Curry will be very angry." For Ku, if he eliminates the buzzer-beating three-point shooting, his career three-point shooting percentage can rise from 42.3% to 42.8%. Don’t underestimate this 0.5%. Curry has taken many moves, and the base is too large.

Finally, what does Brother Di think about this? I don’t think there is anything to do if the alliance is released or not. There is no need to be too serious about such small rules. To encourage the offense, this business alliance has really tried every means. But, the most core thing never forgets that as a player, you need to play to win. Whether you are a professional player or play in a class match, aren’t it all for winning? Not many of them focus on participating, right? Since that's the case, you have to throw the ball out in limited time and in limited opportunities. The hit rate is not linked to performance appraisal and year-end bonuses. If you lose the bid, you will lose it. What's the point? In competitive sports, after the game, it’s not interesting, and I don’t want everyone to be fans of the form. Take a bold move and the hit rate may be 1%. However, if you don't take action, you won't have any chance to score...
