Mavericks may make a contract renewal decision this week for the underrated star

According to reports from Adia Krishnamuti, a reporter from the US sports media NBA analysis network. When the Dallas Mavericks want to move forward from the Luka Doncic era, they must decide the future of one of his former teammates.
The Dallas Mavericks hope to open a new chapter in their franchise history, which will be written by Cooper Flag.
After trading Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, many believe that the team must wait years to acquire a new team cornerstone.
But fate will intervene, and the Dallas Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft draw, giving them a chance to pick Duke’s outstanding Cooper Flag with the No. 1 pick.
The Mavericks decided to build around Flag, which included the re-signation of Kyrie Irving for $119 million. But another star who plays with Luka Doncic will get answers this week about his future with the Mavericks.
Dallas Mavericks Will Re-sign PJ Washington
According to Mark Stein, big man PJ Washington will be the next big signing for the Dallas Mavericks as the striker qualifies for a four-year contract worth just under $90 million this Friday.
"The next signer worth noting is likely to be PJ Washington of the Mavericks, who qualifies for a new four-year contract on Friday for a sum of just under $90 million. But league sources told The Stein Line that Washington may be postponed."
Stein added that while Washington won't be a starter before Cooper Flagage, he has done enough work to win a new contract with the team.
"While he is no longer an automatic starter in Dallas after the Mavericks won the draft draw in May and have the right to pick Cooper Flag with the first pick, Washington himself turned 27 on Saturday and has no shortage of admirers of the league management."
PJ Washington is unlikely to be traded next season
Since Washington has no starting role in the Mavericks, and his age and low pay will attract a lot of interest, some think he will be traded.
However, Stein said Washington's new contract would make him ineligible for a trade within six months from the date of signing, meaning he will likely remain with the Mavericks until the end of next season.
"Washington's annual salary of less than $25 million will certainly still be the coveted player of opponents' teams...
"But it's important to note that he is not eligible for trade within six months of signing a contract extension, provided that any new contract signed is more than three seasons, or a 20% increase in the first year from his $14.2 million salary in 2025-26 season.
"So, it seems likely that Washington will spend all of Flagg's rookie season in Dallas as his teammate."
Washington will be a powerful backup asset for Jason Kidd and the Mavericks next season as he can fill the power forward and play the role of small ball center when needed.
However, if the Maverick receives a quote before the deadline that will give them a generous return, he may be traded to give the highest bidder. What do you think?
