Why are the local players in England generally expensive? What is the reason behind it?

3:26pm, 2 June 2025Football

The word "household registration book" is very interesting. It mainly refers to the players trained in local youth training. Why are their prices more expensive has a lot to do with their league's player registration regulations.

FM football managers and fans who often play FM football news will know that there is a rigid rule for the Premier League, that is, each team's 25-person first-team roster must include at least 8 local youth training players.

The local youth training players here do not refer to English players. They have been trained for English clubs for three years during the age of 15-21, or played for any clubs under the FA and Wales FA.

The ratio is actually very high, accounting for almost one-third of the team's quota.

Due to the existence of this regulation, the "household registration" players in the Premier League will be very scarce. Because in order to participate in the competition, each team has to work hard on the registration quota, and these must be taken into account when planning the lineup.

For example, Manchester City's Lewis, Foden and others, a fan asked before, why didn't Manchester City sell these players earlier and then introduce stars such as Wilz and Musiara to replace them?

is not that easy.

If you blindly trade players such as Lewis and Foden, you will find that Manchester City's first-team lineup will have less qualifications for local youth training players, which will have a great impact on registration.

Although stars such as Werz are indeed of good quality, you cannot attack your local youth training players just by introducing stars from other countries. At some point, you still have to consider whether the lineup structure meets the registration requirements.

This is a phenomenon unique to the Premier League.

Things are rare and expensive, and this will be the case in the market. Due to the scarcity of resources, this will lead to the team "starting prices". Even though they know that players will overprice, there will still be teams spending the price to buy, which is in line with the team's strategic needs.

After talking about the special regulations for registered players, let’s talk about market reasons. Rich wealth is also a major factor in the increase in the price of household registration funds.

As the Premier League becomes larger and larger, the economic benefits gradually improve, the teams are also particularly rich, and the broadcasting costs and ticket revenue are also rising.

Each team can make a lot of money in one season, and the worst relegation team can have nearly 100 million euros of broadcast revenue.

What is this concept?

Other leagues are relatively poor, and their broadcast income may only be several million euros in a season, while the Premier League team is dozens of times that of the opponent, and the gap is gradually widening.

When everyone has money and can buy players in the market, what will happen next? Naturally, the "price index" is rising.

Originally, one pound of eggs costs 10 yuan, but now it can be sold for 20 yuan. Anyway, everyone has money and can afford it. It doesn’t matter if you raise the price a little bit. The same goes for

players.

The real value of the player may be only a few million euros or more than 10 million euros. Now it can be 30 million or 40 million yuan, all of which will be a premium, and there will be an inflated process.

There is nothing we can do about this. Everyone has money, which will inevitably lead to this phenomenon. Everyone can only play in such an economic game. If you don’t play, you will fall behind your opponent. Now the Premier League has become a money game.

Thinking about it, in the football world, I can still see the scene of signing stars for hundreds of thousands of euros and two or three million euros; now I can't see them, and I can't sign them for stars for tens of millions of euros, and the market has reached this point.

According to this trend, I think the price of Premier League players will be higher in the future. The prices of hundreds of millions of yuan are no exaggeration. Will there be a transfer fee of 200 million yuan in the future? This is also possible, and no one can expect what will happen in the future.
