Klopp: I once told Guardiola that his golf level has improved, but how could he have time to play

3:15am, 1 October 2025Football

Hupu September 30th Klopp accepted the exclusive interview with TheAthleticUK.

[Rumor Board] Klopp: I no longer want to be a coach, nor do I care about what others think of me

Klopp cherishes his experiences and the people who created them, but he is not a person who likes to look back. He only returned to Anfield once after leaving Liverpool, which was the last game of last season, with Slott and his players being awarded the Premier League Championship trophy.

He cherishes the newly acquired freedom and flexibility.

"I have the option, I can go on vacation. When to go, I decide. Well, Ula decides when to go." He said with a smile. "But this is not decided by the Premier League or the Bundesliga."

He said he sometimes leaves the training class he observed 20 minutes in advance.

"Because I don't have to see the last point. I've done it all my life. It's crazy, but I don't miss it. I'm still in football, still working in an environment I'm familiar with. But I'm learning new things every day. There's a time when I haven't worked as hard as I am now."

It would be a bit rude to say that Klopp's coaching career is like autonomous driving, but the desire to challenge and explore new things is obviously his motivation. He said he had been in office for nine months, but felt that he had accumulated five years of experience. He joked about the reality of daily business operations, saying that things can be done well through "five millions of different people".

"I come from a world where everything I need will happen. Now I may hear someone saying 'I heard you say that,' but that makes no sense."

He seems to be interested in these things, not annoyed. He has not cross-worked with other sports at Red Bull, including Formula One teams and hockey and cycling programs.

"I've seen an F1 race and they sent Max Verstappen (Red Bull driver) off the game after 30 seconds," he said with a smile, joking that he didn't dare to go to another race.

At Red Bull, he is developing relationships with the group's athletic directors and coaches. He said the game style must be defined as "energy."

He participated in an important transfer window for RB Leipzig, which was underperforming last year and missed the Champions League qualification. With 26 transfers, they now have the youngest lineup in the Bundesliga. He will contact the players to show his legendary style and help the team reach a deal. He said he would check the player's video or profile if someone invited him.

"When they are 100% sure, they don't need to... show me. But I've been involved in a lot of things in Paris FC and Leipzig." He said it's reasonable to join Red Bull. For most of his career, he was both a club creator and a coach. His own style of play reflects the characteristics of Red Bull to a large extent, and Liverpool also signed players from Red Bull, including Conat, Mane and Sobosloy. He has coached at clubs like Red Bull, which are aware of their place in the football ecosystem.

"We are not the final destination, we are not Liverpool... nor are we the Manchester United before!" Another burst of laughter. "Write it if you want."

He has become accustomed to cultivating talents, selling players and rebuilding teams. Klopp has been deeply involved in the planning of the new training centers of the three clubs he previously coached. Last week, he visited the new training facility under construction by Red Bull in New York.

"It would be state of the art, I've never seen anything like this before. It's crazy, it's really cool. I felt completely changed as soon as I walked in."

He grinned.

"But the last thing I want to do is to be the old man in the room..." He pretended to be an old man. "The kind of people who say 'Everything was good in the past. That's what we did!', hope I can do it before that level.

I want to be that 'corresponder'. If necessary, I want to be an urgent helper for coaches or sports supervisors, and someone they can contact when they don't know who to talk to. You need to build a relationship."

Red Bulls have experienced coaching changes, most notably Klopp's former teammate Marco Roze was fired by Red Bull Leipzig.

"It's nothing special. It's never going to be my hobby. But it's something you have to do," Klopp said. "I hope that when I hire a coach, the reason is justified. If you eventually succeed in cooperation, it is also for legitimate reasons, not the media's requirements.

I want to cultivate this (stability); more trust, overcome difficulties together. If you are sure, then be sure. This is the world: 'Oh my God, you are amazing!' Then it becomes: 'Oh no! You are so bad.' There is no more gray areas. And life is often gray."

He admits that he does not miss the endless media tasks, and in order to meet the requirements of domestic and foreign broadcasters, he usually has to give more than a dozen interviews a week.

"It's never a problem," he insisted, highlighting the privileges that the job brings, but the job itself can be mechanical. He said that the reason why his world feels small is because it is small in nature.

"Think about the absolute movie star in your mind. To me, Daniel Craig is James Bond. You'll think, 'Oh my god, he's James Bond!'

I'll think: Where is he now? What is he doing?

But in the end, he'll still get up in the morning and brush his teeth. He's on set, and the set is not the kind we'll see in the cinema later. You sit there and repeat the same scene 25 times.

You won't think about these things. But I've had a life like this. I know that almost all football coaches live like this. They're born for work and devote themselves to it. You can't succeed in this industry without doing this..

But then I told Pep (Guardiola)—his (golf level) almost improved with age! I didn't even play golf for a minute! So he is a genius, and I am not. ”

His voice increased by octave.

"When did he play golf? I can't believe it. ”
