Alisson s repeated hamstring injury is relatively rare for a goalkeeper, and the hamstring is also difficult to heal.

Hupu, October 9th: TheAthleticUK Liverpool team analyzed Alisson’s hamstring injury.

He has missed 14% of Liverpool's Premier League games since moving from Roma in 2016 and has suffered five hamstring injuries in the past three years, most recently in last week's 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray.

Now it seems that recuperation is a foregone conclusion, and this latest injury is undoubtedly another blow to the 33-year-old player, who has required extra care and attention in recent years.

Liverpool's medical and fitness teams are working hard to reduce the risk and effectively manage his condition, but it is no secret that his hamstring injury has been a concern since late 2023. He missed three games with a minor injury at the time, then missed two months with a more serious injury in early 2024.

He was injured again against Crystal Palace in October last year, his most serious injury, which caused him to miss nine weeks until he returned to typical form in December. The exact date of his latest injury has not been announced, but he is expected to be sidelined for around six weeks.

The bigger question for Liverpool - and Brazil as the World Cup approaches - is why Alisson suffers so many injuries when hamstring injuries are not usually related to goalkeepers.

The answer is not simple, especially because the causes of Alisson's injuries vary. Alisson was injured while playing a long pass at Crystal Palace last year; but at Galatasaray, the problem occurred when he rushed back to the goal after receiving a wrong pass from Konate.

Experts consulted by TheAthletic say a serious hamstring injury increases the risk of recurrence and that even careful preventive measures are not entirely effective.

"Given Alisson's age and previous injury record, it is not surprising that he would suffer a similar injury," said a physio who did not want to be named. He was not granted interview permission because he was employed by the club. "There are three areas to consider - his anatomy, how he moves and training load. But the biggest risk is previous injury."

The severity of hamstring injuries in football has also become a hotly debated topic in recent years, largely due to increased schedules and reduced rest time.

The grading standards for hamstring injuries are A (mild), B (moderate), and C (severe). Experts have noticed that the recovery time for hamstring injuries is constantly being lengthened.

The injury may also spread to certain sensitive parts of the muscle, such as underneath the tendon or the T-junction (the base of the hamstring), which physical therapists say are the most challenging to injure.

More often than not, injuries are caused by overstretching rather than sprinting, although Alisson has experienced both in the past 12 months.

"This injury is less common in goalkeepers, but more common in outfield players because of the way they move," says Professor Ernest Hildes, a surgeon who specializes in hamstring injuries. "Goalkeepers have a lot of explosive lateral movements, like diving and hip thrusts, so they move around the field very differently." Shields believes it is crucial to determine the exact nature of the injury. "Sometimes injuries are underestimated and this can catch the medical team off guard," he added. "If your injury is minor, you may be able to reduce the time it takes to return to play, but it is important to follow the healing process and allow the tendon to return to normal strength."
