Why did the Three Lions’ golden generation perform so poorly? Gerrard: We are all naive, conceited and disunited

October 7th Liverpool legend Gerrard recently talked about the England team that was called the "golden generation". The Three Lions during the era of Eriksson and Capello were absolutely star-studded, but they always failed in international competitions. Gerrard says this is because of serious egos among the Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea stars.

The so-called "golden generation" of England mainly includes Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Terry, Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Ashley Cole, etc., but they have never helped the Three Lions break into the semi-finals of any major competition. Speaking on the Ferdinand-hosted podcast, Gerrard said the team was too immature to even get along.

Gerrard said: "I think we are all conceited losers. Now I see on TV, Carragher and Scholes are sitting together and having a debate. They look like good friends for 20 years, and Carragher and Neville are the same. Of course, including me, you and I have a much better relationship now than before. You know we have been players together for 15 years.

"Then how come we didn't connect when we were 20 to 23 years old? Is it because of pride or competition? Why are we closer and closer now that we are mature and at this stage of our lives? Why didn't we connect when we were teammates in England?

"I think it's down to the team culture in England, we were never really connected together. Everyone was too closed off, not friendly enough, and not united enough. We were not a real team and never formed a strong team at any stage."

Although Gerrard played 114 times for the England national team and served as captain, he admitted that he sometimes hated being with the national team.

He said: "I hated that life, I didn't enjoy it, and I even hated those rooms. In the early days, I would have moments when I was depressed and I would think, I have to stay in the room for seven hours, what can I do? There was no social media at that time, and there were no things like DVD players."

"There were only a few TV channels to watch, and I often felt depressed and low." Of course I love playing and playing for England and it makes me very proud. I also like to train, but I only have 90 minutes of training time every day. Then I'd have to be alone in London or somewhere else.

"I will think that from now until half an hour before dinner, and then the next day, I have to stay in this room. I feel that I am not in a team, and I don't feel that I have any connection with my national team teammates. I just want to leave as soon as the game and training are over."
