August 14 The Athletic reported that Wilhel is no longer hopeless to return to the Arsenal youth training camp as a coach. Currently, Max Porter is the most likely candidate to take over as the club's U21 echelon head coach.
Wilhill, 33, has previously served as the head coach of Arsenal's U18 and has recently negotiated with the club on returning to his youth training coaching position. The negotiations initially focused on letting him take charge of the U21 echelon. Arsenal's former U21 coach Mohammed Ali left office in July and transferred to Brentford as first-team coach.
The former Arsenal and England midfielder has been highly praised for cultivating new stars such as Skelly, Envanelli and Dowman. Many insiders in the club recognized that the meritorious player from the youth training returned and took on an important role in order to strengthen the connection between the youth training and the first team. Despite concerns about his second entry into the palace in the short term, Wilshire is still one of the candidates in the selection process of Ali's successor.
Wilhel, who played 197 games for Arsenal and played 34 times for England in his player age, left Arsenal's youth training camp in October 2024, joined Norwich City as the first team coach, and then became the team's interim head coach until the end of the 2024-25 season.
However, the nature of the positions provided by Arsenal has changed. In addition to leading the U21 echelon, Alibaba also served as the head coach of the U19 team that competed in the European Youth League. The club plans to split the position, with Porter in charge of the U21 team, while Wilhel is responsible for the U19 team and EFL trophy competitions, and assisting the U21 coaching staff.
At present, Arsenal has not reached an agreement with Wilhelm on this arrangement. At this stage, he is not considered to join the reorganized youth training system. Wilhel is expected to turn to seek to develop a coaching career in the adult squad.
Porter, 39, is about to receive the position as Wilhel withdraws from the U21 coaching competition. He has been promoted step by step since joining the Arsenal youth training system in 2017. After Alibaba left office, he temporarily took over the U21 team with Ken Gillard, and will now officially become a regular.
