The Daily Mail has named the 21 best scorers in the past 30 years, with Ronaldo ranked 6th, and Messi ranked 2nd.

This list was compiled by 59-year-old sports journalist Oliver Holt. He has 30 years of experience in football, including seven World Cups, eight European Cups and 22 Champions League finals. Holt's selection criteria are based on the personal impression the player brings to him, not simply data. Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski and Crespo were eliminated because Holt had limited opportunities to watch these players.

He described Messi as "a player who everyone has the honor to see his game", referring to his dominance in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals and his leadership in Argentina's 2022 World Cup. But in his list, Brazilian star Ronaldo ranked first, and his explosiveness, speed, technology and unforgettable moments created for fans are commendable. From a hat-trick at Old Trafford in 2003 to a bracelet in the 2002 World Cup final, R9 interprets the classic invincible shooter. Although he maintained a record of historical goals, Ronaldo ranked outside the top 5 and was described as "a shocking athlete, a goal-obsessed shooter." Holt cites finding more "exciting moments" in other players as a reason for his lower ranking.

This list also emphasizes the influence of the number of goals. Lewandowski (677 goals) and Ibrahimovic (561 goals) were not selected, while Cantona (185 goals) was selected due to "play style and attitude". Drogba was praised for his many key goals, including a header for Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final. Given Holt's relationship with Manchester United, 62% of the players on the list have had experience in the Premier League. With the hat tricks in the 2018 World Cup championship and the 2022 World Cup final, Mbappe beats Ronaldo and ranks fourth. Liverpool legend Daglish ranks third.
