Leverkusen striker Bonifers recently publicly admitted that his transfer to AC Milan's trade was eventually broken due to a historical knee injury. In an interview with the media, the Nigerian international admitted: "The transfer failure comes from my past injury records. I have undergone surgery on my right knee twice, and this problem has been plagued by a long time."
AC Milan had reached a lease-to-buy agreement with Leverkusen, and the buyout clause is scheduled to take effect in the summer of 2025. However, during the physical examination last week, the medical team questioned Bonifers' knee condition, resulting in the termination of the deal. This is the third time in Bonifers' career that he has affected the transfer process due to injury problems. He had undergone consecutive right knee surgery in 2019 and 2020, and was absent for three months last season due to muscle problems.
In response to the media's doubts about his attendance rate, Bonifers responded strongly: "Some people are advised to reach my competitive level before evaluating it. I did suffer muscle damage last season, but all professional players will face injury challenges."
Although the contract with Leverkusen lasted until June 2028, Bonifers has not yet obtained a chance to play in the new season. Data shows that during his 61 games at Leverkusen, he contributed 32 goals and delivered a brilliant report card of 21 goals and 10 assists in the 2023-24 Bundesliga championship, of which 14 goals were won in the league. But last season was plagued by injuries, and its data fell to 11 goals and 2 assists.
After giving up Bonifers, AC Milan urgently launched Plan B and introduced Swedish striker Hader from Portugal Sports for 27 million euros. However, the future destination of Bonifers remains variable, and it is reported that some Premier League clubs have expressed their concerns about him.
