June 27, in the long history of the NBA, the Phoenix Suns are a unique existence. Since its founding in 1968, this team has gone through 58 years, but it has never won the O'Brien Cup and has become the oldest "sad representative" among the existing teams without championships in the league. Three finals trips and three miserable returns, the fate of the Suns seemed to be cursed and full of drama, which made countless fans sigh. The first glory of the Suns appeared in 1976. The Suns, led by Paul Westfal and Alwan Adams, created miracles in the playoffs at the time. In the Western Conference Finals, they fought against defending champion Golden State Warriors for seven games and ended up narrowly winning in overtime in tiebreaks. This series is hailed as one of the greatest Western Conference Finals in NBA history, and the tenacious fighting spirit shown by the Suns is moving. However, in the finals, facing the Celtics at its peak, although the Suns tried their best and even experienced the first three-overtime Finals in NBA history in Game 5, they finally lost 2-4. This epic final fifth game is still talked about by old fans, but it has become the eternal regret that the Suns missed the championship for the first time.

Time came in 1993, and Charles Barkley came to Phoenix with the glory of the MVP. The Suns scored a league-best record of 62 wins and 20 losses that season. Barkley's full performance averaged 25.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game conquered the entire league. In the playoffs, the Suns eliminated the Lakers, Spurs and Supersonics in succession to meet with the Bulls led by Michael Jordan in the finals. Although Barkley averaged 27.3 points and 13 rebounds in the series, the Suns lost 2-4 against Jordan at the peak (41 points per game). This loss is particularly heartbreaking, because Barkley once publicly stated that "if I can't beat Jordan, my career will be meaningless." Fate is a mess, and this has become the only finals experience in Barkley's career.

Entering the 21st century, the Suns ushered in the Steve Nash era in the 2004-05 season. The two-game MVP winner led the league's running and bomb revolution with his magician pass. In the 2005-06 season, the Suns lost six games against the Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals; in the 2009-10 season, they entered the Western Conference Finals again, but were eliminated by the Lakers. Until 2021, under the leadership of Devin Booker and Chris Paul, the Suns finally returned to the finals after 28 years. Facing the young Bucks, the Suns set off two games first, and the situation was very good. However, Antetokounmpo's explosion changed everything. He scored 40+ points in four consecutive games, and in the end, the Suns were led by 2-0 and missed the championship again. This loss is particularly cruel because this is the closest time in the history of the Suns to the championship.

Count the three finals trips of the Suns, each of which is full of fateful drama. In 1976, they met the Celtic dynasty that Russell re-emerged after retirement; in 1993, they met the arrogant Jordan and the Bulls; in 2021, they met the peak Antetokounmpo. This tragedy of "born at the wrong time" has made the Suns one of the most famous "uncrowned kings" in NBA history. Interestingly, although the Suns never won the championship, they have developed many Hall of Fame-level players: from early Coney Hawkins, Paul Westfal, to Charles Barkley, Steve Nash, and now Devin Booker. These stars have won the love of countless fans for the team, but they have never been able to bring the coveted championship trophy.

From the perspective of team culture, the Suns have always been known for their gorgeous offensive style. Whether it is the fast attack in the 1970s, the violent aesthetics of Barkley in the 1990s, or the "seven-second attack" in the Nash era, they are all very ornamental. This style has earned them the reputation of "the most entertaining team in the league", but it often fails in the playoffs due to its defensive shortcomings. After the current boss Matt Ishbiya took over, the team began to focus on offense and defense balance, and Kevin Durant's transaction in 2023 is a clear proof. However, the cruelty of the competition in the West has made the Suns' road to championships full of variables. The embarrassing record of not having a championship in 58 years has made the Suns one of the most famous tragic teams in the NBA. But from another perspective, being able to enter the finals three times and approach the championship many times has proved the resilience and competitiveness of this team. In competitive sports, champions are important, but those stories that never give up and fight repeatedly are also touching. The Suns' journey tells us: the charm of sports lies not only in the joy of victory, but also in the courage and persistence shown in the pursuit of excellence. Perhaps, it is this tragic color of "unlucky" that gives the Suns a unique position in the hearts of fans. When one day they finally break the curse, the joy of that moment will surely be sweeter.
