According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, the free agent Mason Plumley has reached an agreement with his previous team, the Charlotte Hornets. He signed a one-year contract with the Hornets for a total value of $3.6 million. Shams mentioned that this is Plumley's 13th season in the league, and this signing has also enhanced the depth of the frontcourt lineup.
In the just-concluded NBA regular season, Plumley played 74 games for the Suns, 21 of which played as a starter, with an average playing time of 17.6 minutes per game. He averaged 4.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.6 blocks, as well as 0.8 turnovers and 2.1 fouls. Plumley shot 61.9% from the field but shot 0% from three-pointers and 64.8% from free throws. At the beginning of the season, his performance was commendable, especially in offensive efficiency and scoring ability at the basket, and his passing and support skills were also well recognized. However, as the season progressed, his competitive state continued to decline, gradually losing his influence on the offensive end, and his playing time began to be compressed.
Perhaps because of his poor performance in the second half, Plumley was unable to gain the trust of the playoff team, so the market in the free market was not ideal, and in the end he had no choice but to return to the Hornets. Now the Hornets are relatively weak in the interior. They sent off starting center Mark Williams during the draft and traded Yusuf Nurkic before. Currently, there is only one young player in the interior. His contract is not guaranteed. Against this background, the Hornets re-signed veteran Plumley can effectively maintain the team's lineup depth.
At present, Plumley is 35 years old, and her condition has declined significantly. The shortcomings in athletic ability and movement speed are becoming more and more prominent as she grows older. His value to top teams has been greatly reduced. So, what does joining the Hornets mean to him? This may be his chance to get more playing time in the new season and is crucial to his future career. If he cannot prove his abilities in the new season, he may not be too far away from the NBA.
