Only 2 rounds left! Premier League 5 is in full swing, only Liverpool locks in the Champions League qualification

11:44pm, 14 May 2025Football

After the 36th round of the Premier League last weekend, the battle for the top five in the Premier League is still fierce. At present, only Premier League champion Liverpool has secured a place in the Champions League next season in advance, while the teams between 2nd place Arsenal and 7th place Nottingham Forest are only 6 points apart. Considering that there are 2 rounds left, everything is possible next.

This season, the "magic number" in the Premier League is five, not four. Due to the outstanding performance of the England side in three European competitions, an additional team will be qualified for the Champions League through the league rankings. Six teams will enter the top European stadium, with Manchester United and Tottenham qualifying for the Champions League based on the results of the UEFA Cup final, but this will not affect the top five teams in the Premier League.

Last weekend, Arsenal was able to ensure that they were qualified for the Champions League by winning the away game against Liverpool, but they ended up only 1 point, so the Champions League qualification has not yet been determined. There is also a game between their main rivals, with Newcastle hosting Chelsea at home. In the end, Eddie Howe's team won, with Tonali and Guimarães scoring goals respectively, helping the team win 2-0. So, with only two rounds of games left, which team is in a favorable position to compete for 5, and which team needs to do their best?

Arsenal - 68 points

Last weekend, Arsenal drew 2-2 with Liverpool was encouraging. They were once questioned after being eliminated from the Champions League, but the Gunners proved their strength with the counterattack launched by Anfield after being two goals behind. However, Merino was suspended for one game due to a red card.

Add two more points in the last two rounds of the game, and Arsenal will be able to ensure qualifying for the Champions League. Of course, they also hope to lock in second place, after they were caught up by pursuers. Their last two rounds are Newcastle (home) and Southampton (home), and former Arsenal goalkeeper Ramsdale should not prevent the old master from entering the top five on the last day.

Newcastle United - 66 points

Newcastle's three-point victory over Chelsea is not enough to ensure they qualify for the Champions League, but it is already very close. Eddie Howe's team seized the opportunity, and there was no distraction from European competition this season, and they scored 22 points from 27 possible points.

Newcastle may still need to complete the task in the final round in the penultimate round against Arsenal (avoides). They will face Everton at home in the final round, and although Fulham found David Moyes's side on Saturday to be savored, Everton is currently in no way.

Manchester City - 65 points

Manchester City failed to beat Southampton, but Haaland's return should help in the last 2 rounds. Guardiola's team still has its own destiny, which is not always guaranteed this season.

Next they will play against Bournemouth (home) and Fulham (home), and they will have to face at least one team that is still competing for European qualifications. If their competitors lose points, winning one in those two games may be enough.

Chelsea - 63 points

Chelsea's defeat at Newcastle is already painful enough, and Nicholas Jackson's red card is even worse. The striker will miss the last two games of the season due to a suspension, with Maresca's team looking for goals elsewhere.

First, they will face Manchester United at home, who is focusing on the UEFA Cup final and is currently in a bad state, with only 2 points in the last seven games. If Chelsea cannot win this game, their hopes may be shattered, and even if they win, they need to make a difference in the final round against Nottingham Forest (Away).

Aston Villa - 63 points

A 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace in February once dropped Aston Villa to 10th place, but they still have the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League with their outstanding recent performance. They have won seven of their last 8 games, but the away loss to Manchester City may end up being the decisive factor. Emery's team will face two Europa League finals in the last two rounds of the season, first to Tottenham Hotspur (home), and then Manchester United (home). Both games have the possibility of winning, and if you can score 69 points, it may be enough.

Nottingham Forest - 62 points

Nottingham Forest may regret the scores lost at home in recent weeks. They scored just one point in three home games against Everton, Brentford and Leicester City, falling out of the top six for the first time since the beginning of the year.

Such results mean that the next game will not be easy, but if they can beat West Ham away and Chelsea at home, they will ensure that they qualify for the UEFA Cup. If other teams lose points, they may even make it to the top five.
